Postgraduate programme commenced in 2011/2012 Academic Session after the approval by Senate and Council of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina as well as National Universities Commission (NUC).  The programme took off effectively in 2011/2012 session with 72 students comprising of 5 Ph.D, 59 Masters Degree and 8 PGDE.  This number increased to 116 in 2012/2013 Academic session with 3 Ph.D, 106 Masters Degree and 7 PGDE.  The number of candidates has since then steadily increased over the years.  In 2013/2014 session the number rose to 135 students with 106 Masters Degree and 29 Postgraduate Diploma students.

Professor A.R. Mohammed was appointed as the foundation Dean of the School with Yusuf El-Ladan as Deputy Dean while Ibrahim Wada Sani a Deputy Registrar was appointed as Secretary to the School.  Professor Atiku Garba Yahaya took over the Deanship from Professor A.R. Mohammed, Professor Aliyu Muhammad Bunza succeeded Professor A.G. Yahaya and presently, Professor Ibrahim Y. Sada is the Dean of the School, Dr. Jamilu Shehu Galadunchi is the Deputy Dean, while Hajiya Wasilat S. Saulawa a Deputy Registrar is the Secretary to the School.

OBJECTIVES

  • Develop in graduate students the spirit and scientific enquiry through training and research.
  • Create an atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity.
  • To train manpower in the areas that will stipulate socio-economic development of Nigerian.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA    

The following shall qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma admission:

  1. Graduates of recognized Universities;
  2. Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with a minimum of Lower Credit pass or its equivalent in relevant areas;
  3. Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) without Education obtained at Credit level with a three years relevant postgraduate experience;
  4. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above, which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate and Senate of the University.
  5. Candidates with Third Class degree in areas other than Education can be considered after three years relevant postgraduate experience. Those in the Education may be considered in their area of specialization;
  6. All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.

 

B. MASTER’S DEGREE

     The following shall qualify for the Master’s Degree Programmes: -

  1. Graduates of recognized Universities who have obtained the approved Bachelors Degree in relevant field, with at least Second-Class Honors or its equivalent.
  2. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the ones listed above, which are acceptable to the Senate of the University. 

     The following shall qualify for Professional Masters’ degree admission:

  1. Graduates of recognized Universities who have obtained the approved Bachelors Degree in relevant field, with at least Second-Class Honors or its equivalent.
  2. Candidates with any Bachelor’s degree in Third Class division who have at least five years relevant working experience.
  3. Candidates who possess Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a Credit pass and at least a Credit pass at Postgraduate Diploma of a recognized Institution;
  4. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the ones listed above, which are acceptable to the Senate of the University.  

C. DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)

The following shall qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy admission:

  1. Graduates of recognized Universities who have obtained a good Masters Degree appropriate to the proposed areas of study;
  2. Graduates of recognized Universities who have obtained Masters of Philosophy degree with considered high CGPA to proceed for PHD in the appropriate field to the proposed areas of study;
  3. In addition to (i) – (ii) above, a candidate must possess at least a Bachelors degree in Second Class lower division;
  4. Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above, which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the University;
  5. Candidate must state the proposed area of research and submit a synopsis of not less than 500 words of the proposed topic of research.

Matriculation Requirement:

In addition to A, B and C above, a candidate must satisfy the University’s matriculation requirements of the programme i.e five Credit Passes at the O’level to include English and Mathematics.

All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.  There may be screening/entrance examination on a date which would be announced on the University Website (www.umyu.edu.ng). Candidates are therefore advised to check.
