Professor Idris Isa Funtua
Idris Isa Funtua graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He obtained an M. Sc in 1989 and a Ph.D in 1993 in Geology, and an MBA in 1998 from the same University. Additionally he had attended various trainings in the field of Neutron Activation Analysis, Analytical Chemistry, Radiation Measurements and Monitoring and Industrial Applications of Radiation Technology. His professional experience spanned over 30 years mainly in Geology, Geochemistry, Analytical Techniques, Radiation Measurements and Monitoring, Radioactive Waste Management, Industrial Applications of Nuclear Technology, Project Management and Academic and Administrative Leadership.
Professor Funtua had served as Research Assistant, Research Fellow II & I, Senior Research Fellow, Principal Research Fellow and a Professor with Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria over a span of sixteen years. He served as Director Special Duties at the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) charged with the responsibility Total Quality Management of the Regulatory functions of Authorization, Inspection and Enforcement during a sabbatical leave in the period 2005-2006.
Professor Idris Isa Funtua served as Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the foremost nuclear research establishment in Nigeria from August 2006 to December 2010 and as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from July, 2008 to July 2012.
Over the years Prof Funtua have taught trained and supervised undergraduate and post-graduate students and have served as external examiner in Universities for Undergraduates and Postgraduates. He has also carried out Assessment for the positions of Reader and Professors for several Universities within and outside Nigeria.
Prof Funtua has more than 100 publications with sixty (60) journal articles, seventeen (17) published proceedings, nine (09) technical reports and over forty (40) invited conference, workshop and seminar papers. He had attended more than twenty (20) International conferences and over fifty (50) Local conferences.
Prof Funtua had served in various International, National Panels, Boards and Committees in academic and other professional fields that include radiation and nuclear science and technology, mineral and energy resources sectors/fields. Other national assignments include Returning Officer for Gubernatorial and Collation Officer in Presidential elections in 2011.
Prof Funtua is widely travelled having been to thirty (30) countries across four continents. He is a Fellow/Member of Materials Science and Technology Society of Nigeria (MSN), Nigerian Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS), Nigerian Institute of Physics and an Honorary Fellow of Fisheries Society of Nigeria.
In June 2015, Professor Funtua assumed duty as the Vice Chancellor of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, Nigeria
