Brief History of the Department
The department of Microbiology was established in February, 2012 under the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. The Department started with Professor Abrar A. Khan as the pioneer head. The programme started with 44 students admitted during the 2012/2013 academic session into 100 Level. At present, the Department has a total population of about 300 students across levels 100 to 400 .The Department has 19 Academic Staff, 4 Laboratory staff and 2 Administrative staff. It is worth mentioning that the Department is about to launch its maiden edition of UMYU Journal of Microbiology Research (UJMR) which will be the first departmental Journal of Microbiology in the country. In addition, the Department got an approval to start running a “Professional Certificate in Public Health Microbiology”.
The programme has been designed to provide a sound understanding of the concepts of microorganisms in relation to mankind and environment. The programme will elaborate the importance of microorganisms in industry, health and environmental sectors of the society. It will also emphasize the importance of traditional biotechnology and its link to the current modern biotechnology.
The main objectives of the programme are as follows:
To broadly educate students for positions in the industry, health sectors, and research institutes.
To prepare students for graduate and professional studies/research in the applied areas of microbiology.
To train the new generation through different disciplines of microbiology so as to meet the requirements of public and private sectors within and outside the country.
To promote and engage researches that will determine possible ways of controlling diseases that over the years pose serious threats to the health system in the country.
To create awareness of environmental pollution and how to take charge of it.
Microbiologists study microorganisms and their impact on the biosphere with emphasis on their beneficial and detrimental effects and how they can be harnessed to promote good health and general well-being of humans, plants, and animals. Microbes are found every whereon our planet (from the driest, hottest deserts to the permafrost and vents on the ocean floors). The human body is made up of an estimated 10 trillion cells and at the same time houses about the same number of microbes. Thus, we live in the world of microbes, and even by a mere look around the environment is enough to make us realize that microorganism literally rule the world through their various essential roles that are responsible for the appearance of oxygen in our atmosphere, continuity of biogeochemical cycles, development of our immune system, production of pharmaceuticals, and various domestic and industrial products to mention but few.At the same time, these unseen companions are responsible for the worst threat that happened to humans and animals throughout the history of life. The current worldwide ongoing pandemic of coronaviral disease is enough to show the extent to which microbes can pose threats to human existence.
The few aforementioned points alone are enough to show how interesting, exceptional, and special the discipline of Microbiology is. The department of Microbiology of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University is blessed with vibrant microbiologists who are experts from various fields of Microbiology united by a common goal of understanding the complex microbial world and how they can be utilized to the advantage of our environment, human wellness and capital development, as well as overall National development through active teaching and research. We believed that experience mixed with a unique perspective and a heap of creativity is more than enough to produce outstanding microbiologists with an entrepreneurial vision that can contribute to the development of our University, Katsina State, Nigeria, and the world atlarge.
The main mission of Microbiology Department of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University is to provide locally-effective and Globally-recognised Microbiology training that adheres to the highest standardand lead to translational knowledge and research for a sustainable ecosystem and national development through intellectual experience, professionalism, creativity, inquiry, innovation, and dissemination of knowledge. To achieve our aspiration, the Department offers training at various levels in academia that lead to certificates in Public Health Microbiology (PHM), Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Microbiology, Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM) andMaster of Science degrees (M. Sc.) in various fields of Microbiology. In addition, the Department is holding monthly seminars for staff and student and Postgraduate Conferences in addition to the National Microbiology conference to enhance knowledge/experience sharing and dissemination of scientific findings. We support collaborative and individual research from researchers within and outside Umaru Musa Yar’adua University. This an open invitation to such intellectuals with the zeal to participate in research, teaching, and learning Microbiology. To augment the above, the Department has established an International Journal of Microbiology (UMYU Journal of Microbiology Research, UJMR) which has now gained wider recognition and acceptance both within Nigeria and in some foreign countries.
Finally, I welcome our students at various levels (undergraduates and postgraduates) to the Microbiology Department, the heart of FNAS.
