ABOUT ISSCERER

The Center was established in May, 2008 at the University Research Unit under the Office of the Vice Chancellor to provide functional research, development and training in Renewable Energy Technologies for sustainable development of Katsina State and to harness the abundant renewable energy technologies in the State and partner with some of the more established counterparts in areas of interest nationally and internationally.       

The Center operates the following Specialized Research Groups with membership from across the Faculties of the University:

  • Solar Energy Research - Thermal and Photovoltaic (PV);
  • Wind Energy Research - Horizontal and Vertical axis wind turbines;
  • Small Hydro Research - Intends to set up a 50Kw demonstration unit at a location near the University;
  • Bio-fuel Research             - Use Jatropha (chin-dazugu) and Moringa (zogale) oil for biodiesel production; and
  • Energy Efficiency and -How to operate conventional power system with Conservational Research    more efficiency and other energy conservation method

A state of the art building was constructed, furnished and equipped for the Center by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) which was commissioned in September 2012.

To become a world class Centre for the development of Renewable Energy Technologies to meet Nigeria’s energy needs. It is also envisaged a centre of excellence in Research and Development in Renewable Energy Technologies for sustainable development.

ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRE

 

ACTIVITY REPORT

The activities concern mainly research and development (R&D) programs. Four research activities and one European Union (EU) Grant Project on Sustainable Development of Farm Agro-forestry and Fuel Wood Conservation System in North Western Katsina State are currently on-going with progress as follows:

  • Model Solar PV/Wind Hybrid Power System for Off-Grid Rural Areas in Katsina State:

The research proposal for this activity was developed and approved by the University Board of Research and funded by the TETFUND Research Grant. The research project seeks to harness the wind energy potential for optimizing lifespan and efficiency of conventional solar PV systems. The research is supervised by the Director of the Center (Dr. Abdullahi A. Mati) as the Principal Researcher.

  • Energy-mix optimization involving mass injection of renewable energy sources in Katsina State:

This research project was initiated with the objectives of bringing the various energy resources of the state into a modeling framework in order to evaluate the optimum energy-mix that should guaranty cheaper and reliable energy to the citizenry. The feasibility criteria of the evaluation would be based on technical and economic reliability of all available options.

  • Development of 50Kw Solar Parabolic Dish/Heliostat Electricity Generation Plant

This is a collaborative research project between the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Center for Renewable Energy Research and Centre National D’ Energie Solaire(CNS), Niamey, Niger Republic. The research is funded by the Raw Materials Research Development Commission, Abuja. No much progress was recorded within the period of this report as a result of the delay in the release of fund. Approval had been granted to the principal Researcher (Engr. Ibrahim Haruna Soba) and an Assistant Research Fellow from the Center to visit the CNS in Niamey on 9th January, 2017.

  • Development of Off Grid Sustainable Electricity Generation system for Guinea Fowl Production and Illumination of Communities in Katsina State:

This research project is funded by the TETFUND Research Grant and was initiated to develop a solar powered modular, systematic and sustainable hatchery system for communities; create sustainable job opportunity in poultry production and increase food production (meat/egg). The project commenced in July, 2016 and is estimated to be completed in June, 2017. Principal Researcher is Abdulkarim Hamza El-Ladan.

  • European Union (EU) Grant Project on Sustainable Development of Farm Agro-forestry and Fuel Wood Conservation System in North Western Katsina State:

This project took effect on 14th May, 2014 and was officially signed by the representatives of the European Union and the Ibrahim Shehu Shema Center for Renewable Energy Research on 12th August, 2014. The EU contribution to the project was 80% while the balance of 20% was counter funding from the University and the three co-partners namely: Department of Forestry, Ministry of Environment and Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYC). The project covers five (5) LGAs of Batsari, Batagarawa, Jibia, Kaita and Rimi for duration of 48 months. Dr. Abdullahi A. Mati is the Project Coordination Manager under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor.

The project is in its third year with records of tremendous achievements consequent upon which the release of the second tranche of EU financing of €1,822,042.87 was made on 17th October, 2016. And sequel to the recent visit of the EU Ambassador to the project sites in October, 2016, the EU had pledged its commitment to expanding the project on the requirement that the State Government fulfils its share of counterpart funding.

The project implementation for the second year saw the consolidation of the gains made during the first year in the following major activities;

  1. Mobilization and sensitization of farmers and CBOs on economic models of Agroforestry practices involving more farmers taken to Niger for excursion visit.
  2. Updating of Baseline survey on Agroforestry and NWFP processing
  3. Establishment of more private nurseries at the LGAs under PPP arrangements.
  4. Production of more seedlings by private nursery owners and improvement of seedling distribution to target farmers.
  5. Training of additional farmers at train-the-trainers workshop and sensitization workshops held at each LGAs on Agroforestry management practices in preparation for propagation of seedling.
  6. Improved design and fabrication of more efficient mud wood stove and training of local porters on production of improved wood stoves.
  7. Installation of new mud stove production systems at production Centres of each LGAs under PPP arrangement.
  8. Launching of NWFP processing Centres at LGAs and training of CBOs and cooperatives on processing techniques.
  9. Production of improved wood stoves at production Centres and PMU and mass dissemination of improved wood stoves to local communities.
  10. Design and construction of improved mud roasters for suya meat sellers at different locations across the LGAs.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ON SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATION AND SUPERVISION (SPVIS)

The training was initiated and designed by the Center for Renewable Energy Research in collaboration with the German International Cooperation (GIZ) as part of the MOU signed and in consideration of the emergence of solar photovoltaic technology in Katsina State and the Country at large. The training was organized to provide the required man power and expertise to address the challenges of the maintenance of solar facilities installed in the hospitals, water plants, street lights, etc in the State and across the country.

 

The training was organized for candidates with Degree/HND/ND in Electrical; Electronics; Mechanical; Mechatronics; Physical Sciences and Renewable Energy for the duration of 4 weeks

The training was designed to among other issues:

  • impart the requisite knowledge in the design of vast array of solar PV systems in various end-use to meet the specific load demand;
  • impart the requisite knowledge in the selection of appropriate solar PV technologies to suit various end-use applications;
  • impart the requisite knowledge in the installation of solar PV systems in line with the international operational safety and technical standards;
  • enable participants acquire skills to supervise team of technicians for large scale solar PV installation; and
  • Enable participants perform economic analysis of the solar PV systems employed in different end-use applications.
