Department of History and Security Studies

With the establishment of the Katsina State University in January, 2007, the Department of History took off at the temporary site of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic building.

The programme started in the 2006/2007 Academic Session with 2 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturer II and 8 Graduate Assistants. Malam Jamilu Shehu was the first staff appointed as acting Head of Department. Currently, the Department has 1 Sabbatical Professor, 4 Visiting Professors, 1 Visiting Associate Professor, 3 Permanent Senior Lecturers, 2 Permanent Lecturer I, 9 Assistant Lecturers and 1 Graduate Assistant.

Programme

The B.A History Programme emphasizes on formal lectures. A minimum of four academic sessions is needed for a student of UTME, and three sessions for direct entry to graduate with a degree in History. In the final year, a student is required to write a dissertation on a special topic. The topic is chosen by the student, approved by the Department and guided by a supervisor.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

Philosophy

The philosophy of our course is aimed at preparing the minds of our students to acquire lessons of history to move our society, the nation, and above all the world forward.

Aims and Objectives

  • To educate students on the historical movements of global importance from other continents to enable them acquire better knowledge of the world and thus promote world peace.
  • To develop the sense of commitment and capacity to consciously relate Historical forces and development in such a way that Nigerian and African unity, independence and prosperity can be achieved.
  • To provide the students with the advantages usually associated with historical training, viz: critical and analytical faculty and balanced judgment needed particularly in administrative and managerial responsibilities.
  • To make students become aware of their responsibilities and opportunities as Nigerian citizens.
  • To stimulate an appreciation of the world in which the students find themselves and to encourage students to develop mentalities which are suitable to post-colonial era and compatible with national and intellectual integrity as well as continuous development and progress to humanity.
  • To give students solid foundations for further studies and research in history at both local and national levels.
