Islamic Studies

H.O.D. WELCOME ADDRESS

The Department of Islamic Studies is so far faring well in its giant strides towards attainment of greater heights. During the last accreditation exercise this Department scored the highest in the whole university. Seven of our academic staff are pursuing their PhD’s in Nigeria and abroad one of them has just completed and returned from Malaysia. We hope in the next 2-3 years we will have fewer problems with staffing.

The Department is also able to record success substantially in area of academic development. Apart from the B.A Islamic Studies programme we now have both M.A and Ph.D Islamic Studies programme. We have in the pipeline the intention Insha Allah to introduce B.A Qur’anic Studies, B.A Shariah, Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Studies and possibly part-time Diploma in Shariah. We are also aspiring to establish a centre for Islamic Studies and local Islamic manuscript repository which will serve as centers of research for local and international scholars of Islam.

We are proud of our current students and those we have graduated. Most of them are doing wonderfully and we are thankful to Allah for all these blessings.

We welcome all to this great Department.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Islamic Studies is one of the pioneer Departments in the Faculty of Humanities. It was established in January 2007. Dr. Musa Ahmad Karkarku was the first appointed Head of Department. He was succeeded by Professor Ja’afar M. Kaura who joined the Department in 2008 on sabbatical from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto. After his tenure in 2009, Dr. Musa Ahmad Karkarku was re-appointed to Head the Department again.

Six graduate assistants were recruited for the Department for take up in 2006/2007 academic session, later the university sponsored all of them for their masters degree in different universities across the nation. In the same academic session a professor and two senior lecturers also joined the department on sabbatical appointment.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Our philosophy in the Department of Islamic Studies is to develop the human mind by instilling in the noble traits of Islam that would make man responsible and useful to himself and the humanity, believing that such development will be the catalyst for the ideological, socio-economic and political rejuvenation that is needed particularly in this millennium. The Department shall promote Islamic learning, for which Katsina is known, by teaching and research, and participate in finding solutions to multi-dimensional problems confronting humanity and Muslims in particular.

The Department of Islamic Studies, being a component part of the Katsina State University, has the overall realization of the Mission and Vision of the University as its main objective. In particular it has the following objectives:

  • To acquaint the students with the broad outlines of Islam as a religion and culture;
  • To prepare the students to understand Islam as a culture and civilization;
  • To describe Islam to the students according to its own sources (particularly the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet);
  • To maintain a rigorous scholarly approach to the problems of contemporary Muslim communities with a particular reference to Nigeria.
  • To place Islam in the context of other world religious traditions especially those that relate to Islam;
  • To prepare candidates that would adequately serve the staffing needs of schools and colleges in Nigeria and beyond; and
  • To produce better quality intellectuals, professionals and scholars by integrating the qualities of faith (Iman), knowledge (Ilm) and character (Akhlaq) to serve as agents of comprehensive and balanced progress as well as sustainable development in Nigeria and the world at large.
